It has recently been reported that the Italian oil company Eni Spa has announced the discovery of more natural gas off the coast of Mozambique. It is reported that the new field includes at least 10 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, increasing the total yield of the area to 70 trillion cubic feet. Natural oil and gas exploration has reportedly increased in recent years in Africa, a source for crude oil, and it is proposed that recent discoveries in Mozambique have made it a regional source of liquefied natural gas.

It has been recently published that South Africa has secured the rights to locate about 80 percent of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a $ 2billion project capable of detecting signs of extraterrestrial life in the far reaches of the universe. If the project is formally endorsed and implemented by government, the area (located in the arid terrain of the Northern Cape of South Africa) would become subject to international law thereby precluding controversial hydraulic fracturing activities, or 'fracking' within the project area. The area is considered to contain substantial gas reserves, currently being investigated by energy company Royal Dutch Shell and petro-chemical group Sasol.

Nigeria is reported as set to overtake South Africa as the biggest economy in Africa in the next few years and highlights the significant business opportunities to be had in fast-growing countries on the continent. Statistically it is argued that currently 11 of the fastest growing economies in the world are in Africa.
